The design and construction of 3-D prototyping tools for engineers and educators requires knowledge about microcontrollers and a versatile, low-cost hardware solution, in order to operate scientifically innovative devices such as high-temperature 3-DOF manipulators and equipment for growth and testing of organic materials in a wide temperature range. This book presents the methodologies for the integration, the operation and the optimization of the resourcefulness of readily available material - Arduino - with 3 D printers. Herein we also discuss the structure and design of modern 3 dimensional prototyping techniques and provide a description of specific projects related to their design and fabrication. The reader will also be introduced to several interfaces that enhance the capabilities of a standard Arduino Board and acquire knowledge about effective elements and methods that facilitate the conversion of an Arduino device into a highly versate prototype tool. As a result of this systematic approach, the reader acquires the necessary background for selecting options that determine the effectiveness, the accuracy and the repeatability of their construction sequences and the comparison between state of the art and enduring design solutions and concepts for prototyping. Chapters are demonstrated through practical cases involving the use of readily acquired material -Arduino electronic circuitry board- with relatively inexpensive and often spontaneously available 3 dimensional printers and specialized features intended for advanced or innovative prototypes.

This book shows how to prototype a wide variety of embedded electronic devices and electronic systems using the Arduino platform and a 3D printer. Quick-and-easy step-by-step instructions are presented for all types of hobbyists, students, and professionals interested in experimenting with electronics and designing prototypes. Prototyping is quick, cost effective, and consumes little power, but it is not necessarily the first choice in traditional production environments, because the resulting prototype hardware has significant restrictions. However, this is especially true near the end of the prototyping stage before production quantities start being built, for example, when design changes must be made to an undesired feature, or if some specific part is hard to get or costly to produce. The methods described here accommodate these times, allowing designs to be fine tuned until such time as production quantities are desired, while lowering overall costs. The book covers several common electronic applications-devices such as sensors, actuators, data acquisition equipment, displays, clocks, alarm clocks, security systems, robotic components, Wi-Fi units, networked control systems for physical processes, rolling road graphics, sporting good instrumentation, CAD trainers, and aviation elements-that demonstrate how anything from the simplest logic gates to complex systems can be prototyped by building models that take advantage of existing experience in a very cost-effective way, using readily accessible open-source (free) software tools like Arduino and readily available online design examples, and making full use of readily available free software libraries for different applications. This style of prototyping also allows creativity to flourish and allows real world experience backing experimentation, making it easier for people to understand the field of electronics — a field often depicted to be one difficult to break into. No prior background in hardware construction, electronics or programming will be needed by those interested in taking part in this fascinating project. The implementation section of the book allows every potential interested party to test personal abilities and necessary skills; thus, newbies can play with toy models — while experienced designers can tackle more complex projects.
