This book provides a summary of the material and concepts utilized for modeling metamaterials. It focuses on acoustic metamaterials for broadband applications that can significantly enhance various properties of acoustic waves ranging from tranport and transmission to dispersion and noise abatement.
This book places special emphasis on the acoustic applications for acoustic metamaterials. It begins with an in-depth discussion of the periodic architected materials as acoustic metamaterial panels, shells, and metadrums that are composites of solid and liquid-viscoelastic phases, and their theoretical modeling. Subsequently, specific design approaches for both static and dynamic metamaterials are presented regarding both their finite element models (FEM) and homogenization theories. Subsequent chapters seek to introduce the inverse design strategies based on global optimization techniques. Moreover, methods such as the complete design space exploration and topology optimization of metamaterials will also be covered in detail. In addition, the book spotlights experimental demonstration studies done using conventional metamaterials and other alternative acoustic metadevices that have great potentials for practical applications such as noise and vibration insulation, underwater sound harvesters, and sound identification and localization. By the end, several engineering examples will be exploited to show how to adapt metamaterials for various engineering applications.
