В то время как большинство этих книг являются отличными источниками для исследователей, существует острая потребность в книгах, подходящих для преподавания предмета на уровне бакалавриата и магистратуры в университетах. Потребность в такой книге, которая могла бы послужить учебником на уровне бакалаврских и магистерских курсов, была ощущена авторами во время преподавания курсов по нелинейной оптике студентам как технических, так и гуманитарных специальностей на протяжении последних двух десятилетий. Current works on nonlinear optics vary in content, writing style, and scope of spefic topics, emphasis on areas, and depth of presentation. Although most of these are excellent scholarly resources for researchers, a strong call for books which are appropriate to present the topic at under- and graduate level was felt by their authors when instructing during two decades on nonlinear optics courses comprising both science students and engineering students. This publication emerged from efforts to coincide the need to present the subject in the college setting. College-oriented one-semester courses encompassing the fundamentals could effectively be built from these variables.
Current literature in nonlinear optics varies widely in content, style and depth of coverage, and diverse emphases in selected topics. While most, if not all, of these works are excellent sources for researchers there is an urgent need for texts suitable for undergraduate and graduate university instruction in this area.
The author, who over the past years had continuously taught courses in nonlinear optics, felt this need and set out to produce a unique text that could serve the needs of its intended audiences.

This book has emerged from an attempt to address the requirement of presenting the subject at college level. A one-semester course covering the essentials can effectively be designed based on this.
