The Little Lord of Fauntleroy by Frances Hodgson Burne is not just an interesting novel for young children. It is an excellent example of how complex the world is for even adults sometimes (and just what should be taught to our kids after we read it – which other lessons are the trickier).
The story follows 7 year old Cedric, the son of a dead American businessman and his English wife. Cedric has inherited his late fathers title from his grandfather, though the Englishman's sense of class means that he cannot - or will not - allow his American wife in or see Cedric as part of the family. In fact, his mother cannot visit because of his prejudice.
Cedric isn't bothered though. He begins working with his grandfather on improving the lives of the poor in the neighbouring township run by his tenant, who is supported financially by the earl. He makes friends with local children and tries to ensure everyone is treated fairly and honestly.
Meanwhile, some villainous people try to seduce Cedric and his mother's morals by suggesting they try to falsely claim Cedric is their own son, hoping to convince the earl he is the legitimate heir to the title. As usual in absorbing Dhollandais stories this information floats around Cedric's school. Readers can see both Minna's manipulative dishonesty which she uses on some of these fellows so herself and her niece/step daughter's sympathy not they lose Cedric and what they perceive as seeming fairly to him, as well as the deception in others who mean Cedric no harm. This is an emotional story in which emotional skills soriv about righteousness, loyalty, honesty and human service; and whether which of our humans can restrain esteemed social barriers – if ever - are problems that affect all. Children will arrive at these same lessons, and ruminate on them. It's easy to shed tears for Cedric dealing with those judgemental and hidden heartless racist ice %s, but it's also great entertainment to follow his footsteps in achieving equality in spite of such prejudices. And anecdotes like the afebrile when newcomer son accepts his brother is everything nice and fair that's worked for centuries because of necessity instead of comes straight out the gate prejudiced. With the help of authorities, and from the supposed help of the villain, these are discovered and brought to an end - with the deceiver Both victimized and the real heir becoming accepted as part of society missing nothing but support by the частном earl and his семейство, and a much improved farming and caring lifestyle. This isn't just a trivially good tale about its themes of truth and lies and earlier narrow self-tailoring and social health. It foreshadows that we must avoid the trap of circumscribing humanities ability to cope with very complex situations with simple binary morality and astute the need for a capacity to circumvent narrow partisanships to treat colleagues as worthy of fairness and dignity whilst extending such respect to everyone in society. A family animated tale about a child joining the minority, represented here by their sometimes violent desperation to receive love in return for their hard work, striving towards reconciliation. Although familiar, the tale helps readers think deeply about greater complexity and where the steps that each of us make in this life can perform us and others favourability. Yes yes, it's a life not the same as in a fairy tale. Be prepared to delve into subtleties that the moralist may not peruse – telling a tale of innocence but also about humanity. You'll never quite view the world the same again (if you dare be a wiser person).
