This is a third book in a projected four-volume series that explores new theories and practices for diagnosis and treatments for mental illnesses. The book's authors, M.R. Islam, started out with two earlier books that laid out the philosophy and principles for the new approach to chemical engineering being employed in creating the drugs used to treat mental illness (the first two books, as described above, were part of a three-book trilogy). The hope is that, by applying this approach, mental illness will not just be treated more efficiently but also more sustainably, both environmentally and financially. Critics joke that "chemical engineering" has been replaced by "pharmaceutical engineering." But while the approach looks novel, Islam and coauthors actually apply practices common to many communities throughout history, ones so widely accepted today that one assumes they're conventional wisdom.
