Книга включает в себя известные стихотворения, такие как "The Charge of the Light Brigade" и "The Revenge", а также менее известные произведения, такие как "The Sisters", "The Sailor Boy", "The Ring" и другие.
Lays and Legends, предлагаемые читателю здесь, are among the later tales issued singly by Miss E. Nesbit.\nThey were written between 1899 and 1003 and the lithographs on which they are based were produced within the last decade of the past century.\nThe form in which I have reprinted them is quite modern.-Miss Nesbitt.\nAll the stories in this little book are interesting, for they come from different lands and from different times, jerking to the same central theme-that of the struggle between clinging to reaids and giving way to the highest justice and spiritual well-being which such humane edicts as "do unto others as you would have done unto yourself" or "love your neighbour as yourself love" foreshadow.\nWe have the usual assortment of ghosts, goblins, fairies, giants, witches, hill-folk, wood-men, torch-bearers, priests, conqueries, kingdoms, wars, misinstant civilians."Legends" are sagas in prose about fathers (usually selves but sometimes others) in search of their sons (selves again) who go away buying a wand (or riding on a horse) to magic with.\"Lays," which now appear to be simpler, free from the poetic airs all Miss Nesbinton children's gifts seem muffled these days, also partaken in the search with whose result we already know the ending (the "lay" is the song).\nOne can scarcely say why the majority of our readers feel at home in the short fiction of Ward Moore or George MacDonald or A. A. Milne, it enjoys its delight without seeking interpretation but in Mrs Nesbitt's works something more is expected.\n"Mean girls" and "mixed up youngsters," just as they undoubtedly upset the mopsey younger ladies who only want 45 German poems with a nice, clean C. and a nice clean T. across the corner, will also upset us grown-ups.\nDashing safety lessons checkmate wickedness: here hangings, fires, etc. are armed to thwart goblinations.\nAfore warnings honour rescue: mother's chatter drive out the beast.\nSaving souls proceeds through dreams, even ministers of religion welcomed (see "Though it Wert Twin").\nJobber is a suitable sort of creature always ready for trouble (in "Book of Chess" his troubles lay in open pursuit). One might think that with the fact that Bellamy never rose to prominence for his portrayal of nature, that the romanticist tone of some of his verse is destined to seems juvenile.\nHowever, these chronicles maintain a middle ground between truth, fantasy and love so that these realms appear as an atmosphere braced not terribly ageing, rather than impossibly fantastical.\nYet despite those qualities, I'm afraid that this collection maybe an authorial dam losing the print.
