Книга Reginald Rose "Twelve Angry Men" повествует об одном судебном процессе, который проходит перед двенадцатью мужчинами, стоящими в зале суда. Каждый из них имеет свою точку зрения на исход дела и способы решения проблемы.

The story is based on the real-life trial of the hanging of William Hilgartnet, in the town of Tappan, New York, in 1883. During the trial, it became apparent that the case was never clear-cut, and that all decisions were being made on an ambiguous legal and moral issue. One group of men, including the prosecutor and the judge, felt that Hilgartsnet needed to be sentenced to death, while the other group, including several of the jurors, believed that he should be acquitted of the murder charge. Each of these groups gave their reasons for their decision but did not compromise on the issue.

At the start of the book, we are told that eleven of the twelve men were involved in the case and later introduced another juror to fill the gap left by one who did not arrive. Due to the controversial nature of the decision, the jury deliberates for a very long time, with 75% of the votes cast going against guilt. They finally come to a verdict that 6 men are guilty and 3 are not. The main issue is that the jurors can't decide what exactly could be considered "reasonable doubt" when it comes to life versus death sentences. In addition, we learn about the personal lives of each of the men as we progress through the story, giving more insight into their thoughts and motivations from their own perspectives, as well as discovering their relationships with each other. Some of them have conflicting interests, whereas others share a common bond of knowing one another prior to this case. This ultimately leads to a realization about what kind of important character traits each one possesses and how these personalities all impact their decision-making process.

Процесс оказывается очень жарким и эмоциональным, ведь все участники очень разные - молодые и старые, бедные и богатые, добрые и злые. И никто, даже самый уважаемый член коллегии присяжных, не может избежать противоречий.
