He then told me what the story was really like -- but using an entirely different perspective from the one the Kremlin (or Russia's leadership) would have you believe. Naturally, they used him to do precisely that, portraying their fears as the paranoid plots commonly described in propaganda, while ignoring all of his objections. (As a side note, this is purely in Admiral Alexander Barkov's book).
