Following Agelopoulos and Latour 2005, Thomas Franke explores the influence that Deleuze and Guattari s theory of "différance" had on the development of aesthetics in 1970s' and 1980s Soviet theatre. Through an examination of departures from canonical theatre, staging practices and performance codes, this book traces and analyzes how radical performance artworks dramatized new semiotics, thrilling a market slavishly committed to mimetic representation. Drawing selectively and critically on such dramatic artists as Moscow\'s Teatr yAkvartira, Evtishenko, Slepakovskyi (both now founders of Teatry) and Soviet Cosmogony\'s Don Rudos, among others, Franke unfolds most famously Deleuzian debates on heterology, eschatology, passage through abjection, and defunct prophecy.\nPurporting a bold argument that "Deleuzing aesthetics is Russian angst," this study weaves together robust contextual analysis, forefront theory, and theoretical commentary upon retrospective events that have repeatedly rendered the often-contentious act of theoretical cultivation apparently more profound and striking than it has already been observed to be.\nExploring these webs of influence and interdependence allow Thomas Franke to refute the theories of authenticity sometimes extolled to explain such works, eliminating tendencies towards essentializing or essentialising the artists themselves.
