Книга разделена на две части. Первая часть рассказывает о жизни главного героя Петера, родившегося в 1724 году. Автор описывает жизнь юноши до того, как он попал в питейное заведение, и после этого. Особенно подробно описаны места, где Петер гулял, что менял и т.д.
Вторая часть книги, также известная под названием “Die anderen”, является продолжением первой части. В ней автор рассказывает уже о другом герое, Пьетро, история любви которого напоминает историю Петера. Я советую эту книгу тем, кто интересуется историей Европы XVIII века. Для чтения я бы рекомендовала современный перевод.
