The novel Oh Whistle, and I’ll Come to You tells the story of Eliza Langby, a young woman whose marriage to Charles Langby has reached the point where even the longest of marriages might become uncomfortable. Torn between love for her husband as well as feelings for another man, Eliza cannot bring herself to leave him when she finds herself impregnated by another man during one of their frequent jealous fights.

In this novel, the author brings forth a fictitious feeling of home that is so common after college graduation when it looks as if you may not be living your life in an uptight, busy work context or by following in the footsteps of the relatives who had been so supportive, but on the tail end in a more backwater way—otherwise known to us as an idyllic writer’s life. As M. R. James lets us know with a modicum of subtext in this description, her home was indeed her writing, and Marjorie certainly carries this knowledge with her.
