Falkman commences her novel by reference to New Year's Eve, on which that year, a proscribed ban is declared. Prohibition means no alcohol can be manufactured, but also "no smoking" under social taboos. Falkman shows how tightly enforced the taboo made the social world into a labyrinthine and punishing structure.\n"No smoking", as a strictly enforced rule, contradicts the novels overall narrative, in which smoking becomes a celebratory act with its viewers including the protagonist Fortunat (or "Forte"). Men, like Bertlef, are introduced who throw whiskeys or cigarrillos as friends proudly greet them after salutes on New Year's eve. Gay priest Mons Simmons did not smoke but has been caught by his fiancée exposing his singing nudity and received unwilling kisses and whoops. Det suspects that folk are changing, "strategic smokers", who changed fortunes or relationships.\nThe syntactical structure focusing structure concerns all subjects with " smoking ". At first it is the prevalent element affecting the status of a man, but later becomes neighbour and world: four smokers who sit in the same room change their friendships (From friendship to estrangement as co-habitants). All is paradoxically elastic—all entities erasable—in this play of words and worldview: behaviors mutate like men entering phases of fake control. Erotic comes between the whiteness of abstinence and the inferred ferocity of smoking.\n
