"Das Seegespenst" (The Ghost on the Sea) is the story of a young boy named Hans who, after his father's untimely death, travels with his mother and younger sister to a new home on an island in the Baltic Sea.

Hans is initially reluctant to make the move, as he feels that he has lost his best friend, Karl, when they were separated by their families' decision to move. However, on the day of their arrival, Hans meets another young boy, Paul, who he becomes friends with right away. Hans also befriends Simon, the son of a sailor, and Philippe, who lives next door.

Then one evening, while they are all swimming in the sea, Hans sees a strange apparition floating by them. Quickly, it disappears beneath the waves, leaving them all worried and scared.

From that night on, strange things begin to happen to Hans. As he grows older, he starts to develop paranormal powers, such as the ability to see ghosts and communicate with them. He soon learns that the shadowy apparition that he saw that night was not a ghost, but a Sea Phantom - a being who haunts the waters off the island.

It is revealed that the Sea Phantom is actually an evil spirit who had been imprisoned by an ancient sorcerer and sealed into the water by his spell. Now, he is trying to regain his freedom by using Hans' powers to bring about disaster on the island's inhabitants.

In a bid to save the people of the island from the Sea Phantom's wrath, Hans embarks on a perilous journey through the world of ghosts, where he encounters both allies and enemies. Along the way, he learns more about the mysterious sorcerer who imprisoned the Sea Phantom and about the history of the island itself.
