This history looks at the ways people throughout history have transformed themselves. Those processes have often involved changes in political ideology and in the material basis of life, as well as important philosophical changes in thinking about the good life itself. Sometimes this has led to transformations from kingdoms to empires, for good, bad, or indifferent reasons; sometimes transforming into colonies (colonization) has led directly to the destruction or death of the inhabitants, in spite of humanity's vaunted beliefs in reason and civilizing missions.
