This book makes a significant contribution to our understanding both of work within the fast-changing developments of global production systems and also economic theory, in particular labour market analysis.It is here argued that work is necessary viewed within its historical context and the linkages between global capitalism and the 'information society' are integral to comprehending the transformations underway and how they might affect the labour market.The book offers a significantly original and original analyses of The New Economy (flexible labour) and studies the impact of this form of work on job security and increasing levels of income inequality. Between these two dominant perspectives Benner highlights the key role which agency (individual workers) plays not just in responding to, but actively constructing these rapidly changing labour market conditions, thus contributing to a better understanding of how labour market dynamics unfold over time. Such a focus on the individual construction of labour market identities based on self-experiance complements and extends previous work by extensions into the growing recognition of human agency and identity.
