Paul Wood sets out in this volume an alternative classical heritage of Western art. He offers arguments in favour of a notion of 'world' art - i.e. in which the individual historical traditions of various geographical regions are linked together rather than relegated to isolated compartmentalized niches - demonstrating how these artistic roots have influenced Western icons and vice versa. Stylistically as a graphic painter, Wood portrays the animating themes of Arab, Asian, African and European visual and cultural practices through rendered drawings and painstaking sketches, most of them prefaced by compact theoretical interventions. Focusing on seminal works like The Birth of Venus (1609), Jusef van Eyk's annual Alhambra series (end 14th - beginning 15th centuries), the Arabian Nights (Middle Ages), de Chirico's works, Star Wars posters, Archer & Adams illustrations, Africana Book of the Dead etc., the scholarship spans from Constantinople to Sydney and from Constantin the African to Callum Avery. As Wood compares different occasions of interactions between various traditional avatars of floral variants culminating into intense relief of cosmic flows, he brings into clear focus the reverberations and ritual engagements with these previously segregated circuits that underpin his ideas of postmalarim characterizations. Moving the boundaries of mesh between occurrences of Eurasian exchange, he proposes an infinite sophistication of connected dimensions, each one defining a sphere of its own unprecedented cosmopolitan archetypes. Ultimately, it will undoubtedly inspire readers to turn the vertical pillars of historical Douay reference manuals into skyward phantasmopoetic nebulae, reflective of a viewer contemplating the horizon itself with its hidden sprawl of concurrent contingent comings and goings.
