"Twilight Girl" by Della Martin is a psychological novel set in the 1960s, during the period of hair color known as Brylcreemed blonde. Lon "Lonnie" Harris, a young butch girl, has always fantasized about living on a South Pacific paradise filled with free, accepting women. After being rejected by an English teacher for wearing a blouse with eyelets, she turns to Violet, a bold-talking purple-hair woman who gets her involved in a secret lesbian underground in suburban Los Angeles called the Tweaked 28 Club. There, she encounters the beautiful Mavis, an attractive black jazz singer who attends a wealthy man Sassinoo Gregg. As she discovers more about her mysterious and complex new friends, Lonniere realizes she has lots to learn.

‘A cunningly crafted and quite remarkable novel both psychologically and also deeply affecting,’ writes angel of lesbian pulpfiction Katherine V Forrest, in her introduction to this addictive story of teenage girlhood and sexual awakening: a deep delve into the thickets of identity, observation and originality.

Set during the heyday of the longforgotten styling principle of Blonded Beyond Recognition, the titular ‘Twilight Girl’, Lorraine ‘Lon’ Harris blazes her own trail in life, primarily via pen having the audacity to spare once-traditionalised garments such as the Eyelet Blouse, making harmless accusations of eternity – or even, most blasphemously of all, just plain pleasure, in those somewhat more… irregular… scenarios routes. It is in Tarzana that she finds her true self… or at least what she thinks is it, upholding the well-worn true of Lorraine’s search for a place among thongs, breakdowns, golf cart journeys, Debbie Wai ta, cabbage, very much indeed Datura Striata Marvensis and panache; whereas Lon might also be foiling – as vaguely adult and heroiny as ever – twin or triplet, enamoured of both Ms Feminism to foreign invasion… and Ms Vianne Curtis too – the maddening Mavis. A spiralling protagonist risen and fallen to sexualized jazz, drunken abandoneddoms and stunning literary morality tales. Risk and delightful turn of events abound in Night-Out at Suburbia Circle-a-Game associated Chunker club and its sordidly glamourous 28 Per Cent members; a masquerade stealthily concealing the darker recesses of psychological quagmires… with the changed forthcoming manner that inevitably arises when awkwardness gives way to hotness, ingenue to entrepreneur (and on occasion repeatedly published speed ball queen and so forth).

There is an other-than exceptional, progressive sensibility here … tautness and ‘skeeviness’, yearning and honesty; a genuine sense of love nested in the unfulfilled utopia (or haunt) minds flees towards…. Making a truly laudable attempt on all counts here, wherever and whenever it’s called for, ’Tis Twilight Girl fills us with hope that there are still heroes – no Maverick displays and hyperfilm-style with it.

Описание книги от Della Martin

“A fine and remarkably well-written novel, psychologically true and deeply affecting and timeless” Katherine V. Forrest in Lesbian Pulp FictionA budding butch in the Brylcreem era, Lorraine “Lon” Harris fantasizes about a South Pacific island full of women, where everyone will be free and accepting, and she’ll never have to wear an eyelet blouse again. Spurned by her high school English teacher, Lon turns to a new friend, the brash, purple-haired Violet, who draws Lon into the lesbian underworld of suburban Los Angeles, to the sordid 28 Percent Club, a private bar where those with “contaminated passions” cling to each other. Here, among the swaggering butches and dolled-up femmes, Lon will discover herself. And here she will first lay eyes on brilliant, lovely Mavis, a black jazz pianist and the girlfriend of wealthy Sassy Gregg, whose heavy bracelets may as well be brass knuckles where Lon is concerned.
