"The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe is one of the most iconic and enduring works of horror literature. The poem presents the story of a visiting raven who terrifies a madman to the point of insanity. The narrator has a romance with his fiancée Clara, who comes to him on the eve of their wedding day with the words "I thought, I might have died tonight". However, en route to their destination she is abducted by a mysterious raven. Edgar Allan Poe was the first modern writer to use a necrophilia theme when writing The Raven.
At the center of the story is the mysterious visitor, the “uncanon’d raven”, of unknown appearance and voice who visits dr Edward Rudge in the middle of the night. He persuades him by “twisting [Rudge]'s thoughts” to reveal to him the cause of his (Rudge’s) emotionless state. What he reveals in turn shakes him even more: Clara in her beauty becomes the subject of an unfaithful alliance. Reading between the lines, it becomes clear that she left her lover Edward, because another man received an offer from his father and so the latter approached Clara with his own proposal. Clara offered herself for marriage to be informed that the offer was accepted, but she did not do it. With Clara’s flight, his love remained unaffiliated in mind. As a result, raven punishes Rudge by turning him into a brainless, grisly creature, devoid of intelligence, feelings, fears, and desires.
Closing the poem to its initial concept, Edgar Allen shows a reverse transformation. It is possible to overcoming the emotional trauma if there is a strong will and struggle of spirit with fate. In the last second, Rudge manages to resist the power of Fate that changed him, as he succeeds in running off with Clara. While the raven also can’t save him now, thus it represents a symbol of hope for a brighter future.
