Translated from Italian by Dorothy Daniels (2006, revised May 4th, 2019) Published by Booktopia Publishing in association with Nova Esdras PressThe ArgumentIn Felipe de Medici’s possession resides a supposedly holy relic: the virginity of Briar, the only living daughter of the God-forsaken line of Israeli kings. As the head of an influential Church Estate whose profits flow directly to the treasury of the Kingdom of Israel, he plans full-out to marry the magical being to his son Alvaro, in order to cement the throne firmly to the Caesars, whom they both know is tarnished by blood. Much more interestingly, for Felipe, Briar is secretly his daughter and this is why he has the relic in his possession: when Briar finds out the truth after escaping her confining room to be confronted with her 'kidnapping’, she must find a way to avenge his father, the man who abandoned her, by marrying the Prince perfectly willingly.
What she doesn't know, though, is that Felipe's lust cannot be resisted, that he'll use every trick at his grasping fingertips to win Briar over if only once, regardless of who she really is, even if she's the rightful queen of the once great Israel Kingdom.
This book was written partly inspired by an actual event and partly by my imagination. According to the bible, King Jerod (Ahaziah of Kings book iv) promised Solomon an incredibly beautiful woman from the South as wife in exchange for becoming god’s crown prince. So I thought of Briar as a composite character if you will, slightly merged with one of Ahaziah's wives. This explains why Briar's change of heart from Morah, a conniving schemer with roots in religious servitude to him, to Alvaro at the mercy of heirless father Friedrich de Salerno and finally to Felipe de Caesari, may sound a bit implausible — so much so that some might label it unhistorical. And it almost scores some points in terms of chilling personal development/grotesqueness and overall effect on the narrator's character—an impact this story brought about with such striking force that it proves to me that evil does suffer and both innocence and beauty do endure despite unreasoning hate. Still if I had been bold enough to write the entire story in some sort of daikonic way, trysts and love could have been somewhat elaborate.
