The Arena magazine Vol IV, No 24 November 1861Various The book is dating from the period 1838 - 1928, The magazine first appeared in Manchester, England in 1841. Advertisements in this period referred to it as "The \'local\' theatrical magazine", emphasizing its appendent connection with English stage and screen life. The magazine's name was occasionally changed, including, for a little more than a year (1859-1860) between Vol. IV, Nos. 7-14, when it was called The Quarterly Review of Dramatic Literature and the Stage. Although beginning publication in Manchester the house organ of interrelated art, literature and music flourished causing splits among its respective groups and subscriptions spiralling off or leaving one house to another. In this uneasy political environment, the magazine averaged over one third as many yearly subscribers as did the London Magazine, originally anchored in Westminster Abbey. Oh, how we loved thee, cherished this magazine as a small child even though I myself didn't know what "Dramatic Literature" surely meant in the context of magazines back then. There were times when my mom was reading the latest issue out loud when dad stormed in and she immediately tried to make the declarations romantic (it's about William Shakespeare!). By my teenage years "updating yourself" became a crucial pastime, and The Arena filled its pages virtually from cover-to-cover with exciting tales of drama coaches (as they were called in the days), celestial chanteuses and beautifully painted gestures of primitive man. Terrapin Street, store of platitudes, who knew that a hundred and thirty years later, under the most bizarre circumstances and global preoccupations, words like galoche, veuve clicquot, demi-sec and even clichés would still rummage in our minds! Remember, folks, we living tears run upon the cheeks of Leontine Kushephorioff, countess Stublishaupt, a coach from the cast of Küsters.
