Name of author not specified in [p. i.] Quarterly statistical journal, compiled and edited by various members of the staff of Chambers's E[dinburgh] J[ournal], and printed for The Chambers S[ocieties] Ltd. Several of them participated in its first 50 issues from 1903-13, when the journal transitioned from quarto to octavo format. When settled in its new guise on March 28, 1966, number 434, it consisted of dispatches from correspondents in France, Germany, India, Java, Nigeria, Spain, Tahiti, and the USA, plus a bibliography of recent articles, with extracts and abstracts of nearly 800 biographies, about 200 geographical and historical reviews, over 30 abstracts of books in the course of publication, some 40 literae humanitatis notices, and selections from the political press and periodicals. Illustrated with news and watercolor plates. "Vol. 091 (No. 497)" refers to the date of publication rather than the number of volumes published; volume series did not start until Rev. Fergus Smith of Edinburgh took over the editorship in 1889. Pages have been numbered differently since journal's change rate. Main focus of 459th issue remained social events and current affairs. A reprint of a letter (part I) from Frederic William Beechey, British consul at Der Abbasieh, who died on October 24, 1872, making him one of original 50 members who erected the journal.
