Robert Greene starts off the preface of his book The 48 laws of power by claiming that the modern quest for power is not new. Greene argues plainly that if you want to gain power in our society, you must shake comers on your enemies and hide behind the noble smile, he ends with his famous quote. "Speak softly yet carry a great sword".
Another aspect that was not appreciated in the past by his readers, but seems true now is the fact that winning isn't as hard as it used to be. Instead, as trends change, the most successful people become more aggressive and deceitful.

His goal is to convey his message as clearly as he can, which is why he often washes his hands of the responsibility for the reader's actions when he writes, "It is later discovered...". As Greene puts it, it is up to the individual to extract whatever truth they can from his writings.
