It was by pure chance that I comeacross this earlier unpublished version of Savanna Woodysand Large Grazers—I had previously flipped through it atthe University Library in Bloomsbury, London, so I knew quitea bit about the contents despite not having read the entirecollection. However, while the Later Decade themed books were notvery linguistically accessible—indeed, some of them featuredsuch thatunstandable language as Code Twelve—this volume in the handbookseries had a clear, unfettered tone making theoretical complexitiessuccessfully apparent. This could be the result of my earliermasteryof savanna dynamics through particular courses taught byLes Landry'.
