Author describes his poetry as stand-alone monologues rooted in the everyday experience, be it in urban, rural, old age, love or vicissitudes of life. "It is a boast that not many men do; but I do write poems about the world and its ordinary colonels," he asserts here. These early poems (inc Ernie's Birthday and Allan's Fortnightly) include his first attempts to pen poetry. Readers will be entertained by the idiosyncratic phrase sallies, such as "idlers in platters", "swoppery (swapping money)" and "vainglovy" (vaudeville). This is poetry without the standard accompaniments: lovers, angels, tumbling waters. Using the ready expressions, and bells and whistles which might be expected from a poetic imagination, there is something unusual and therefore distinctive about Hallam's outpourings. The simple 'household things' featured draw on real-life interchanges with the singer's family and immediacy really comes through. Hallam's later efforts were hugely influential on more experimental poets, inspiring for example, the title poem of Ted Hughes's autobiographical trilogy in Heavenly Body.
