Учебное пособие "Poetry, prose and paintings. Discussion in English" by L. G. Pavlenko is intended for those studying English as a language profile. The book consists of five sections, each containing a poem, a story by English or American authors, and a piece of artwork by English or Russian artists, accompanied by a series of exercises aimed at developing linguistic and cultural competence among senior-year students of language faculties, communicative competence for speaking (monological and dialogic speech, the skill of discussion) and revealing the meaning of the works. L.G. Pavlenok is an experienced specialist in teaching foreign languages. The author has a great interest in comparative linguistic studies as well as in issues of intercultural communication. Moreover, he does a lot of his own research regarding language learning methods. He has researched and described in two doctoral theses various sociolinguistic aspects of L2 (second language) learning as well.
In cooperation with Vera Dmitrievna Kryukova and Oksana Vladimirovna Petrova, one of his most important scientific investigations was the experimental design concerning influence that the form of instruction had on learners' second language acquisition of English language material. Here we can see L.G.'s logical, reasoned researches and proofs for supporting the hypothesis that having the opportunity to work both actively and passively on practicing the newly-learned language helps to accelerate and increase in a good way learners' mastering. It will take a long time for students who want to learn to speak another language to master this skill. However, it doesn't have anything to do with whether learning happens at home or in class. Thus, experience in independent work, pair activity and group projects as the primary means at once on the basis of this research work were in line. Not everything depends on these lines of communication and collaboration (which are vital) when it comes to forming research knowledge and abilities. In the introduction to the dictionary, the author tries out different research techniques, including a personal assessment method, which is particularly suitable for young people. Some of them use this way to self-reflection and self-estimation. This research demonstrates skillful categorical analysis that is most precious here. Interesting examples, using thematic clusters, are also mentioned here that immediately grab the reader's attention. Due to the fairly profound composition, the book develops an understanding of their native language and its history. During the study of the themes found there, the idea of philology is manifested, language in general develops and strengthens, expanding the horizons of a particular student. Having taken into account the brief summary of the aforementioned, the reader and the educator feel fairly confident that this book can significantly help students be able to further study language with greater success, use the original language skills at different levels. There is no doubt about his interest in pedagogy, based on his commitment to his work related to reading the lecture.
