"Notes and Queries" is a collection of questions and answers on various topics. It was published by the British magazine "Notes & Queries", which was released monthly. The first edition appeared on August 5, 1734, and it was intended for the purpose of self-education. As time went on, it transformed into a popular encyclopedic journal.
The authors of the book were different: from amateur writers, journalists to musicians and artists. However, there were very few professional writers among them; as a rule, they were actual correspondents of the publication. The book came out in a small volume, containing a large number of articles. In this regard it was possible to reduce a fairly large cost to a minimum. Still, "The Notes" was the most expensive and influential printed periodical of those times. The fact that it included many anonymous writers led to the fact that many famous works were signed only with three names - "From ... ".

In this number "Notes And Observations", anonymous contributors address various subjects including the following topics: How to buy gold that continues losing weight, a recipe for green woodworm capsules, the use of ground glass in laying lime foundations, ideas for improving morality, a simple cleansing distiller for cooking purposes, lye poisoning in pigs, a method of reuse of rinds and yeast, the merits and demerits of offering kites flown on personal birthday as protection from the evil eye and the best way to cut young pigs.
