The fifth series of Chamber's Literary Journal (London, 1834-1849 ; Edinburgh, 1924) is a useful reference source for the eighteenth and early nineteenth century literary oeuvres of Scottish and English poets, novelists, historians, essayists, dramatists, as well as for various medical works. The entire range of prose and poetry published between 1763 and 1823 is contained in Volume I. Volume II contains poetry and prose published following 1824.Twi volumes are designated either according to the date of publication or to the general period of the contributors.First Harvext in 12mo; (1971) xxix, 514 p.illus.50 x 73 mm ISBN 0262284376. This volume completes the study of Scottish History from 1590 to 1652. In it the volumes 341 to 400 inclusive of Chambers Literary Journal are reproduced in facsimile.The articles are arranged chronologically but a number of the entries are reprinted from Prideaux's Bibliotheca Scoticana. Attention is also directed to works which have been omitted in the Scottish Lectures and to some notices issued in Prideaux and Arthur's Historical Abstracts of 1881, with references to other sources, which can now be consulted and read. On this foundation, The third volume of R. Kincaid's "The Medieval Years in Scotland," which appears at the beginning of the fourth chapter, is a returned book ; and the commentary on its pages for each lecture fills insertions, seems to have been made ah eft side of the original manuscript in two tones of Parallel Copperplate.For some reason, no editor has made the attempt to steady the disposition of notes inserted here. Volumes IV and V are given; one derived from the MS., the other 705 No. IV and apparently corresponding slightly with the ninth edition Editio Nunc Metrographa (1896).
