Microbe: The Scientific and Medical History of a Molecule by Michele Swanson offers an in-depth look at the role of DNA in all known life on Earth. From the earliest recorded historical accounts detailing the treatment of fungal infections to the most recent advancements in personalized medicine, this accessible primer traces the story of DNA science from its first explorations by alchemists and biologists to the modern day implications of medical DNA sequencing. Microbe illuminates controversies, reveals unproven theories, and promises to introduce you to new breakthroughs on every page.
Просто о микробах и людях
Описание: Professor Jay Wolcott and his wife Sara, a graduate student in the Communication Department, move to London from Missouri after the death of their son due to genetic illness. The wolf-in-sheep's-clothing denial ("He would be fine") in the rare genetic disorders milieu has led a disheartened Jay to cast doubt on his understanding of science, science and medicine in general, and himself as a husband, father, and sensible man.
After he awakes with this new certainty, he begins meeting with Dr. Christian Vincent—a culture hero to some geneticists of the age—and his long-time colleague Adam Neiman to gain proof of his theorized mechanism of microbes triggering severe allergies and autoimmune fatalities. These discussions lead to a vindication of his feelings in Missouri and, for himself, "it's time for him to let go".
At the height of those recollections is the moment when he receives a letter from the genocide survivor Lahiya, who now lives with her daughter in the Gaza Strip. This, in his opinion "the darkest, most fertile side of humanity," humanizes the experiences for him other than Sarah and Eleanor (who lives part-time with them).
Initially unaware of Gabriel, the son whom they will adopt, Jay turns their apartment into a bioaurora cave, whose defenses against insects, bugs, and potentially dangerous microbes further serves as protection. But Jay finds EARLY it won't be enough, that the deluge of insects in winter 2015, while heroic, is merely an appetizer. Choosing to ward off his recurring flashbacks by blurting out the syllable "fuck," he dumps water in the air conditioner, flicks switches, and donning strong socks plunges deeper into an effortless trance while listening to Smithson's Asleep.
