The wolf-in-sheep's-clothing denial ("He would be fine") in the rare genetic disorders milieu has led a disheartened Jay to cast doubt on his understanding of science, science and medicine in general, and himself as a husband, father, and sensible man.
After he awakes with this new certainty, he begins meeting with Dr. Christian Vincent—a culture hero to some geneticists of the age—and his long-time colleague Adam Neiman to gain proof of his theorized mechanism of microbes triggering severe allergies and autoimmune fatalities.
