This book explores the relevance of the thought of one of the twentieth century's seminal philosophers, Emmanuel Levinas, for the contemporary rethinking of education and the ethics of responsibility we require in a planetary world. Drawing on recent analyses of the philosopher, this study develops an alternative conception of responsibility as always already engaging in solidarity, and focuses on its potential for decentering the subject in order to address the injustices which continue to exist globally.
Contributing to the continuing conversation surrounding transcendental phenomenology, Levinasian ethics and the ongoing global debate about the future of democracy, this book offers a critical consideration of the key concepts which inform Levinas' major works, exploring their possible relevance for theory and practice in education. Importantly for this collection, the work also engages with the differing views of contemporary philosophers including Alain Badio, using them as a critical lens through which to better understand, evaluate and incorporate Levinas into dialogues about education policy.
