Game Character Creation With Blender And Unity is a complete guide for creating usable and realistic gaming characters using two popular tools: Open Source 3d design software Blender and Free Video Game Engine Unity. Chris Totten teaches those interested or trying to learn about how to build better game characters, or upgrade ones they already have. He explains how each process is done, including the "why and how" behind each one. Artists starting in the 3d industry or students just learning Blender can find a lot of valuable, useful information here. Utility in Studio games is not just being that it drastically increases your character from idea to render-safe model. It also teaches high level rendering practices in general for anyone looking to apply these lessons. In addition it walks through a pretty thorough process in a step by step method, where you can see each step carry over nicely to another application if needed. I personally find things like baking, and choosing quality textures to be excellent ideas to add to my toolkit as I close the gap to working more professionally. Not for the faint of heart if someone is just picking up Blender, there is some reading and math used, however once you get the hang of the basics that gets much easier. The book dives into stages such as modeling, subdividing and cleaning up polys, Materia painting/Texturing and final UV unwrap. It then moves into Rigging which is something totally new to me, so I found that especially interesting and initially quite hard to wrap my head around. Regardless the advice is clear to follow and you do have plenty of handy tips and tricks to try out during development. Once you start to sketch clever variations and bring ever more diverse concepts to life through texturing than it becomes very interesting to see what is possible within those constraints. From a pure design perspective, I felt this was a really well rounded course which didn't put too much texture on a single aspect and dive deeper into one area to push you over the edge. Being able to get all those aspects covered allows you to really screen the strengths and weaknesses in your ideas based on graphically appealing outcomes as well as animated ability. If you are developing a portfolio piece for your own experience, or a future client, seeing a design presentation that can flow from starting idea, through discussion and critique to final prototypes gives you a ton of confidence to tackle the job you are offered. Though I didn't complete this project on my own I would have benefited more and learned more had I had access to the full 20-month course. In this way the result pipeline isn't something you can just pick up on your own as completely. Here I think the extra input would have been beneficial, especially as Unity has it's own caveats and issues you have to workout once in there too which then affecting the final outcome.
