A Commentary on Negotiating Identity. Copyright 2013 by Frances R. Kandel "Double Vision" is an introverted book written for anthropology professors and students. NAPA Bulletin, a quarterly journal, is intended to be a forum for reviewing, discussing, critiquing, analyzing, and framing theory in relation to various forms of social life. Randy Kandel structures his book using a mixture of mainstream theoretical lenses and practiced frames for analyzing identity politics. This approach adds nuance to the traditional debates within comparative ethnicity all too often represented as either polarized ('race') or intellectually inert (rigid generalization of 'nationalism'). The intent behind this rigorous instrumentation of consequences is not to represent a definitive blueprint for change but but rather to widen the agenda to situate different expressions of identity more solidly within a deep humanistic framework, which according to Kandel is "anthropological vision" (p.156). Anthropology, for Kandel, is not an ivory-tower discipline it is a multilayered science that can make contributions in the biography, health, ecology, legal, and political arenas - each necessarily affecting the others. Thus the motivation behind this work stems from the belief that policy applications drawn from applied anthropology will be more persuasive and inclusive if examining the dynamics of interculturality and negotiation. Kandel's premise emphasizes the need for "more subtle, delicate distinctions about the self, identity, rights, power, peace, belonging, migration, cultural tradition, and the modern world," (18). At times, one gets the sense that Randy Kandel has been so steeped in the craft and disciplines of historical comparisons that new ideas and cutting edge developments have escaped his purview. During my reading of this book, I found myself feeling that there could have been additional energy spent in overcoming the text's perceived perceived reluctance to break free of its codes and boundaries entirely. Although these constraints and boundaries may have served as principles of intellectual integrity in some respects, the result feels unsteady and a bit bland. But I can't forget that as stated in the title this book provides the mechanisms of analysis and rhetoric for envisioned future collaborations aimed specifically at policy needs and research dilemmas with anthropological proponents.
