International trade in perishable produces has increased enormously over the past decades. Consumers in developed countries now expect to eat produce grown all over the world and in most parts of the year (p. xi). While plant perishabilities are vulnerable to physical impacts and have storage lives often of merely a few days, they are nevertheless crucial to the world~~"~~economic prosperity and "this book devotes its resources specifically to understanding the workings behind the deterioration, controlling factors and techniques used to maintain high quality through the rigour of careful handling and storage" (p. xiv). The volume aims to illustrate "how to keep getting better improvements through effective practices like traditional or novel ones: control of postharvest conditions like infection, mechanical injury, insects / disease and insects, to use pesticides wisely and to select the best varieties with high postharvest resistance" (pp. 7-9). Included is discussion of key material processing techniques such as sorting, grading, abattoir and packaging operations, preservation technologies such as freezing, dehydration, concentrating and smoking and innovative storage technologies such as controlled atmosphere storage. These technologies are essential elements that if properly integrated with conventional crop management and harvesting practices, help farmers, marketers and processors make informed decisions. Variety of crops are considered, including but not limited to those include:
- Vegetables - Root and Tuber Crops - Fruit Crops""Per Shipment"; Tender Fruits and Vegetables; The Technology of Postharvest Storage, Processing Technologies and Cultivars that Provide Drought and Heat Tolerance;Processing and Handling of Specialty Crops" - Herbs, Spices and Condiments
"For Crop Protection Scientists and Other Professionals in Agriculture, Forestry and Related Industries; Students, Researchers, Postgraduate Students and Extension Workers Serving the Agro-Industrial Community. Though the block language has slightly displeased those fond of vernacular prose, the wealth of premier reports lluded under the opsition of various academics and professionals present enouph detail to ensure this tom is utterly indispensable to modern day agriculturalists".

International trade in high value perishables has grown enormously in the past few decades. In the developed world consumers now expect to be able to eat perishable produce from all parts of the world, and in most cases throughout the year. Perishable plant products are, however, susceptible to physical damage and often have a potential storage life of only a few days. Given their key importance in the world economy, Crop Post-Harvest Science and Technology: Perishables devotes itself to perishable produce, providing current and comprehensive knowledge on all the key factors affecting post-harvest quality of fruits and vegetables. This volume focuses explicitly on the effects and causes of deterioration, as well as the many techniques and practices implemented to maintain quality though correct handling and storage. As highlighted throughout, regular losses caused by post-harvest spoilage of perishable products can be as much as 50%. A complete understanding, as provided by this excellent volume, is therefore vital in helping to reduce these losses by a significant percentage. Compiled by members of the world-renowned Natural Resources Institute at the United Kingdom's University of Greenwich, with contributions from experts around the world, this volume is an essential reference for all those working in the area. Researchers and upper-level students in food science, food technology, post-harvest science and technology, crop protection, applied biology and plant and agricultural sciences will benefit from this landmark publication. Libraries in all research establishments and universities where these subjects are studied and taught should ensure that they have several copies for their shelves.
