The author, 1907-1958, was a translator, editor, lecturer, and critic who gained prominence with his 18 books of poems and several critical studies. He published his first verse, "Steeda Meid" (The Maid), when he was only 17 years old. Robert Service was called a "dissident poet" because of his disregard for traditional conventions of the genre, which he generally considered "unworthy". He strove for a new voice, new lyricism and naturalness in the poetic language. "Robert Service is largely responsible for the emergence of verse in our time", wrote the legendary Aleksey Kruger.
