`Agnes Grey` is the first novel by Anne Brontë. The novel is based on her personal experiences as a governess in various families. The heroine of the novel is lost girl called Agnes who is transferred to the house of Jeremiah Grey whose only daughter has died at the age of five. Jack Hare is hired as instructor and governess to Agnes. Agnes and Jack become friends and then romantically involved with each other. However the lovers are forbidden to see each other, so Jack leaves Thornfield Hall.
In the course of her socialisation Agnes learns the social customs of the day and Becky Sharp's novels make an appearance in the conversation。The novel is written from the point of view of Claude Delafield, a young man whom Agnes fancies. The narrative alternates between his romanticized account of Agnes's formative years and his subsequent confessions about his involvement with Kezia Bigwood, a woman with whom he is a secret lover. As Claude has harbored feelings for both Agnes and Kezia it follows that Agnes will commit suicide because she is unworthy of love. In his devastating penultimate chapter, Claude says that he struggles to "choose" between Agnes' courage and shame in contemplating how she would react to such a confession (`Why must this lie be unpardonable?’), and the fact that Kezia carries on loving him when they have had their breakup (`at least you are wise enough not to wrangle now about being run over by people in post-chasers, my dearest Daisy“?)。
This novel led authors to be known as one of the Bronte sisters; however her work was criticized for the bleakness of its depictions, and some believe that she was abandoned by her publisher rather than her work not being commercially successful, although Brontë does not write about these events in her journals.
