This is an out-of-date periodical of foreign literature, science, and art, first published in April 1875 and now being produced under at different name. Although the emphasis of the sheets lies on spiritual subjects, their dedication to humourous elements was never wanting. It seems that authorsly contributions to the magazine were approached "like marrying a beautiful village girl to a wealthy solicitor". Not only did contributors expect serious measures to be undertaken in the interests of condign truth-telling, but there was to be humour in plenty, as it was generally acknowledged "that what makes the spirit rise above itself is precisely the same thing which forces it to sally forth into the joyous world of folly". This paradox was nicely captured by Edmund Gosse when he wrote: "mischief is the friend of reason, for without mischief, there would be no madness". Of course, the pitfalls of ensuing into madness were recognised by the great poet himself when his immortal words rang out from the pages of this extremely entertaining publication: "Too late I find to yearn For that which time has torn Asunder, done for ever! Past hope! all bliss is gone! One trembles for poverty! Melancholy's sad old cloak Hugs every burthen sick! To some it may be flower That wither'd long ago". A fine example of how contemporary concerns relating to publishing took on spirited and satirical matter when brilliant minds of literary, artistic and scientific persuasion got together to have a fun in translating, editing and discussing foreign literary works and technical delights, essays and reviews, jokes and anecdotes, cartoons and caricatures, paintings and watercolours, architecture plans and engineering marvels made available to their avid readers. Enjoy, peruse and plunge into these historical keepsakes of word, image and thought, be entertained and instructed, enlightened and aghast, frightened and fascinated, hopeful and despondent, elated and dejected, blissfully content and blissfully wroth, loving and loathing, laughing and sobbing - the eclectic variety which these sheets, this April 1st issue number thirteen, brings to you, is as stimulating as it is enigmatic... and hopefully, elevating. And overstating? No way, Jose -Enthusiastically yours and others' truly, VariousAuthors of Eclectic Magazines, 1st April, year of Our Lord 1994 We wish you worry, fashioning you to love, puzzlers and researchers, who will roll your eyes, tumble your heads down their benches, clutch hats to hearts, stamp one hand in vague air and murmur "(Ahem!) Those madmen, those so very mad...'angry radicals', they're called."
