An Old-Fashioned Christmas (1823, poster 1849) by Washington Irving tells the story of a young lady whose wedding plans in the Antipodes are rudely thwarted in favor of an appointed engagement, at the instigation of her father-in-law, a local judge.\nDevastated by the prospect of marrying the boring Mr Moses and unable to bear the thought of her beloved departing for the colonies until after Christmas, Lucinda Jarvis enlists the assistance of her clairvoyant old nurse, aoemas, to foster prosperity and happiness at home during those wintry days. Togo, the hero of the narrative, is taken prisoner by the Bodomites, a bushranging gang led by Yendo, but Allied help arrives in the form of the quaint Old Shatterhand, who performs a pious miracle of extricating Togo and compelling the bosynes to disperse. Toward the conclusion of the Festive Season, their good works complete, Togo is allowed to marry Lucinda, upon entering into which the Americans depart, thus avoiding a conflict between the two nations.\nIrving\'s tale exemplifies his style as a lively storyteller and his idiosyncratic literary savoir-faire. One characteristic style that Irving was adept at mastering was supplying a "Southern" perspective on the plot–that is to say, a perspective from a point of view other than that which also affects the Arst vocabulary (comprised predominantly of words and phraseology that reflect the cultural views of frontier and countryside, supporting within the context of the narrative being told by a Southern-English speaker).
