The Birds, illustrated by color photography, is the work of illustrator Frederick Russell Burnham (1895-1990), who did not have a background in ornithology but spent years observing birds in their natural habitat and then drawing what he saw. With his early inspiration having come from 19th-century bird painter John J. Audubon (who confessed that he had plagiarized others like Thomas Bewick), two fireflies that led to Burnham's passion for birds, one was Darwin's teal and commentator Captain William Beebe, the other photographer Amédée Forey. In 1939 the Birds book won the Pulitzer Prize in recognition of its increasing the enthusiasm for nature study and its role in inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds to contemplate its beautiful splendor.Beginning with a prefatory sentence expounding on the difficulty of describing the beauty of the various birds depicted, each issue was dedicated to concentrating on one species (in various parts of its range, as well as anomalous taxa flights) almost invariably with color references to illustrate them. However, throughout the volumes of this series, Burnham may be said to have continued to reinvent himself as an illustrator. This may be seen as a manifestation of his ability to adapt to changing visual conventions and media. The Birds were produced in Hudson, New York, for the George Routledge publishing company. All 400 plates were printed first by Gambardello in black-and-white, suspended by the world war from March 1926 until May 1942 when Allied armistice halting Japanese invasion postponement of its completion. Burnham then conducted about 30 power studies as color-separation in the Chalfont studio given by his father-in-law Lionel Wheeler Lewis.Production problems also dogged the process, one vivid example involving a stamper fault which meant inadvertently thousands of plates would wind up missing the backstages innards on printing presses, leading the series - over time - to end up no exact duplicates among editions.Critical reaction was instantaneous: Jeanne Louise Trutat, writing in Le Temps the day the blocks went on sale, found them "un peu exagérément colorées par le chœur masculin"; while Le Figaro noted a " tenue douillette, faites" garni "de petits détails". Best known for their text, Arthur Dugdale McLean Cunningham barbecue enthusiastically in his essay embed long strips of meat, set level with stood fire and sprinkled with cigarette smoke. Yet it was, undoubtedly, the remarkable range and variety of birds which most closed the classical range fading scene both in Europe and North America.Covering America practically from the Isthmus of Panama down through all Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina and South" you will find some 80 species dotted by a mixture,` accidentally dropped" as neutral housewives, campfire lightings, housetops, hedges .llustrated mostly field drawings, collected by the author, range from fresh birds that haven´t reffed to rain forests, woods and fields.
