This book forms the third instalment in a series of global reviews of conservation approaches tailored to specific groups of ecologically significant insects. The previous two books in the series, Beetles and Conservation and Hymenoptera Conservation, each focused on a particular insect order and how conservation measures have been tailored accordingly. This new work looks at the extraordinary importance of Lepidopterans (the predominant group of insects in the Order named after the Roman word for 'little wings'), dedicated to the study of which more English butterflies, or monogastric Danaidalid moth larvae (Decapoda!), are the favourites or the best studied animal taxa within the entire insect regnum. Such lofty sanctification of butterflies has not simply altered the present-day thinking about insect identification and preservation; it has likewise facilitated delineation and management of these invertebrates' key resources, while also paying heed to meticulous documentation of the British insect community, which is thus far leading the world in such efforts.
In this book, different themes are addressed through varied actual cases and histories, together with an adequate backstory provided in order to make it accessible to non-experts. Thus, this work, which was specifically intended for both entomologists and environmental authorities and natural historians, constitutes a readable collection of topics woven around the subject of Lepidoptera conservation.
