"Ein Weg führt zum Wegelands" corresponds to the years 1815-1918 and documents the upheavals, travails, and joys during which the newly emancipated women search for their place in society, as particularly illustrated for the süddeutsche social milieu. The second part, "Lebenserinnerungen und Retrospektiven kritischer Geschichtsschreibung," on the other hand, follows a solid tradition, with the pioneering, anonymous author presenting her thoughts in a critical perspective. This ranged from the early decades of the last century to the present day. Because the text is handwritten or typeset, there are numerous errors. Also, as the narrator hails from the village of Wittlich, due to her lack of education and regional dialect the lexicon may be slightly formidable. Nevertheless, the writing is generally fluent, if terse and occasionally bleak. It also explains the path one should take through life and informs us about the older generations and their role models and taboos. She offers unique insights into the lives of working class women in rural Germany during the interwar period. For more academic work the narration must be viewed with some discernment, but if we want to understand deeper and more personal the experiences of poverty stricken German women in time, this book should be read.
