October 26th, 1985, the BBC broadcast a seven minute documentary about the Ethiopian famine that killed over a million people. The documentary made headlines around the world, striking the consciences of Western countries. This humanitarian catastrophe, centred on the Korem refugee camp, had unprecedented media impact and generated an extraordinary wave of solidarity, donations overflowing expectations.
The involvement of media outlets, charities, and major celebrities from the pop and rock worlds culminated in the first step towards a paradigm shift in humanitarian crisis coverage and management, previously limited to Christian missions and pure charity. An ethical debate in international cooperation also began, which, thirty-five years later, remains alive.
In the novel, Johannes Abel is an Ethiopian boy who masters survival as an art, experiencing hell and hope to the fullest extent. Over time, the boy, now an adult, experiences a parallel transformation alongside events unfolding in the country and the influence of various European characters who cross his path: a journalist, a girl from Barcelona's suburbs, a missionary, French aid workers from Médicos Sin Fronteras.
En la Senda del Hambruna places us at the heart of the Ethiopian drought in the mid-eighties and early nineties, with connections in Barcelona, New York, Paris, and Milan. Based on documented historical foundations, the novel also brings to light, through testimonies and fictional experiences, the great contradictions of humanitarian aid and international cooperation.
