“Das Datum” Rolf Netzmann

Rolf Neutzmann’s novel “The Date” raises the question of whether it is possible to define the essence of reality accurately even after years of research. The protagonist’s torment for a while made me consider if this book inspires more enigmatic thoughts than answers to the reader's questions about himself or the surrounding world.

Even before it had been published for years, the author’s work caused much discussion among local intellectual circles as there were several scenes of the book that touched on difficult topics of fundamental human rights. After all, who would not react to a sense of mystery when it comes to such significant issues?

As I read, I could hardly prevent myself from feeling that some connection between the protagonist's thoughts and my own was taking shape. A part of me understood this incestuous feeling, but another was threatened with questioning why there was not enough information provided by its author. No wonder. Even the structure of Rolf Nuetzmann's “The Datum" is complicated for readers not long into it. The sentences do not have any structure; the story shifts from place to place, without telling the viewers what is happening. Reading the plot of this novel is identical to trying to puzzle together a complex picture without any clear lines or descriptions, which seems quite ambitious. Because of this, readers have to admit that they are not completely caught up with the universe of Rolf Neutztman, but it also forces them to strive towards the character of the work and its message. Nevertheless, despite the darkness that covers the mind of Tim Kempf throughout the novel, it still casts some light on his attitude towards humanity.
