This book offers a brief but comprehensive history of US policies towards Iraq, as it has developed over the course of the last 20 years. It takes a regional as well as an international perspective to describe how American relations with Iran have evolved in recent decades. The author argues that to fully grasp the long term development of US foreign policy towards the region, it is crucial to comprehend this process in context and in a setting of fluid power dynamics. At the end of every chapter, these dynamics are brought alive by the use of recently declassified governmental documents which complement the text and give an insider's view on US decision making in the Iraq conflicts. The importance of changing attitude on the part of domestic groups and leaders in regard to Afghanistan and the Middle East is also covered.
