Paul Baines offers the "Wiley-Blackwell Encyclopaedia of Eighteenth Century Writers and Writing" which explores writers and their work between 1660 and 1788 (the return of British Monarchy to the English throne to the start and end of the French revolution respectively).
Effectively, this is a survey of more than 50 writers in eight countries of the British Isles, who see new light with this publication. There is a great deal of ground covered, from core authors, like Defoe, Swift and Johnson, to literary practitioners from other countries too.
One of the considerations needed for this initiative was a significant updating of the traditionally cultivated literary canon relevant to this period, with representatives from minor groups of authors carefully explored; less well known women and working-class poets make the cut in terms of complementary coverage.
The latest and most recent scholarship has also been keenly applied to illuminate neglected corners of eighteenth- century composition. This kind of overlap and linking various fields of enquiry within one compendium is beneficial not only for expanding our understanding of a particular period but also for polishing our critical grasp on the wider history of literature.
