"Salomé" by Oscar Wilde is one of the most important plays of the Anglo-French Decadence, based on the biblical story of John the Baptist. He is trapped in a cistern by Herod after proposing his marriage to Herod's daughter Salomé on account of disrupting the latter's arranged marriage with the deceased brother of Herd. Initially attracted to the prisoner, Salomé insists on getting John's head in exchange for his dancing at a feast, and her promise of everything she desires is fulfilled.
