Nathaniel Hawthome is effortlessly brilliant too but wears it worse, what with his orthodox Theology. (At least he only exercised when it was on topic.) Kirkus compared his fiction to shards of glass, sharp but without great substance; it has audibility but falls short of artistic seduction or any sense of gleaming wit except when fiction curdles into polemic. Check out ‘’American Note Book’’ and ‘’Swift and Surefooted’’ if you want an evaluator smoking nerves.
