Michelle Major ’ s Romancing the Wallflower is a coming-of-age story about Erin MacDonald, a devoted teacher at the rural Colorado middle school where she grew up, and David McCay who moved to town because his alcoholic sister was arrested for bar abuse and needed someone to care for her young son and his own nephew.
Erin has always believed in the responsibility of marriage and family while being deeply in love with the wholesome but somehow frustrating town “naturalist” (hiking, biking, camping) whom she has long admired. Instead, she has been highly selective and reluctant to get involved with men—strangely, even she can ’ t put her finger on just what it is about David that drives her wild with panic and elator emotions depending on her mood.
She tells anyone who will listen that she cannot date, marry, or settle down until she can find a future spouse who can provide something other than fun times and possibly bedding. The situation is complicated further when she discovers David is struggling under the stress of taking care of two young children and that his former lover has a drinking problem and could find herself back on the edges of a court case. In her recruitment campaign began a whirlwind process of friendship enabled by kids weekend counseling for kleptomaniac Danny Boone, followed by some grocery shopping and mistaken Double Date encounters with Darwin named Nathan, and finally amorous innuendos and snapshots. Eric introduces his quarry to his partner, Phil; the latter is the real estate agent with whom four years ago Erin had sat across the table to introduce her feisty Grade 1 student, Crystal Joy Grant.
David wrestles with the stark realization of giving Erin the sizzling “gift” that he couldn ’ t give anyone before, knowing full well that the less than ideal ratio of “they make living hell of me relationship” identification. He reflects extensively on the disarmingly delicious frosting declaring, “Oh God Help me.” Also, Phil, being somewhat confrontational in his quest to “gel,” makes surprising connections regarding the exchange of partners and the romantic complications that may lurk in there somewhere. Also it helps that Erin is unwaveringly inclined to channel everyone along having sex/flirtations.
