Unfortunately, Finn starts getting worse in each ensuing meeting, continuing to pester Harriet for more sexual interactions. Gradually, the reader comes to learn that Finn has made up his mind to conquer Harriet's heart even if he has to ruin her life. But with each twist and turn of events, Harriet seems unfazed, carefully thinking of how to keep Finn from her family, friends, and anyone ever finding out about him. In the meantime, Finn becomes increasingly frustrated, prompting Harriet to contemplate being a victim of violence.

Although the novel explores certain aspects of love, such as the destructive power of obsession, sexual manipulation, and manipulative verbal abuse, the main character Finn is portrayed as a fascinating yet erratic character.
