The novel is set in the Moors, a sparsely inhabited part of Cornwall, England. Three unnamed young people escape their British homes to Mexico, but on their return encounter strange phenomena: their cars stop working, their mobile phones disappear, and they see strange birds, known as menaces. They take refuge in Mr Creed's house, which cannot be left once entered. One of them dies as a result of psychosomatic shock brought about by their near-death experiences. The other two realise that insanity can bring cleansing, that resplendent peace awaits at the end of the nightmare. The novel interlaces episodes both real and imagined (inspired by a night saga of death recounted to Stockwell Court coroner Elizabeth Bellinger in November 2001 by Ms Bellinger's 39-year-old daughter Joanna Dyer, prior to committing suicide by hanging) and departs from the three character framework to wander into incongruous stories concerning artists, writers, songs, friends, past horrors, incestuous delights, illegal immigrants, motels, trains,leprosy, nuclear plants, newspaper front pages, vampire movies, octopuses, palm readers, old town ghosts, animal droppings, disaster films, inert flesh, darting eyes, commodities markets, romantic dates, holidays, religious schools, whirling door dreams, elephants in traffic jams, fatal mistakes, divorce trials,Rossmeisl's principle, Slovene names, global terrorism, Jewish Kratom poisons, Three-Brancher islamic saints, press conferences, taxi jaws, crates, rabbits, airline food, Amtrak's crossing the Hook and Goodwin Sands gap, into a Pasternak-like Portland-esque Europe set coextensive with the Cornish landscape, even including a Madeleine Albright-ism.
