They both fall in love – Lady Sarah, the mother of the author, and the Doctor Richard Lawrence, whose father had once belonged to the barber's shop on the corner of a pre-war street of San Francisco.

In the novel, Lori Copland describes the obstacles, prejudices, and external forces that are involved in saving a woman's life. In the process of writing the book, the author also learned to study history and documenting realities. No wonder that the book wasn't officially published until 2008. Nowadays, it is a classic to read for everyone who wants to understand the politics and contemporary state of the medical field.
