The Wedding Garden by Linda Goodnight
This novel has been one of my favourites for quite some time now and I think it deserves to be on your TBR - there are definitely some emotions, twists and turns in here that keep you reading for the whole plot.
On another side note, I'm almost done with the book but haven't written any review yet as the plot holds my attention thoroughly. Here's a glimpse of what the central theme and character arc of the story is all about:
The grand uncle of Sloan Hawkins dies and leaves her his mansion along with his entire estate in a nearby small town in Oklahoma. He did so through a marriage pact which stipulates that Sloan marries the town's most eligible bachelor (someone of "popular lady preference" from the residents), and if they prove uncapable or unwilling she may sell the land. Following social customs and local tradition, the two try to conceive a child before it is too late - a situation that takes soil from beneath the feet of everyone involved.
The urban tract in which parts of the town lies is a hawk-infested cluster, widely feared amongst the locals as a notorious hotspot for ravenous wild birds that dwell in its family trees. But that thinly veiled eponym finds genuine sanctity in faithful anonymity and deep turmoils in hearts that persistential sweethearts on souls. We are pitted into indulging these happenings by meeting characters like Aunt Sally (who has never forgiven her eldest son for abandoning his wife and child) and Andy (a compassionate mechanic who wonders about the ultimate origins of Slone's mysterious past).
Along this way, we come across Sulley, a hot-tempered frustrated guy with an uncertain future and his partner-in-crime Gus (both proven feared by the trading community playing a role as heart throbs for mothers of countless young bachante kids). And of course, our primary protagonist, Myrna (the heart-broken woman and makingjourney of reconnection, repression, healing and finally love).
It is here, amidst all these catalysts that we witness Sloan and Sulley trying to work around the snags in their journey through their various obstacles and misfortunes. As their passions simmer, and a growing tension between their wits and wolves present itself.
